The ‘Circle K Presents The 7th annual SPP Sports Celebrity Flag Football Challenge’ will be taking place on Saturday, January 31 from noon to 3 p.m. at the TradeWinds Island Resort on St. Pete’s Beach. Be aware that this event used to be called the Circuit City Celebrity Flag Football Challenge but the event underwent a name change in mid-January. The official event website still lists Circuit City as the title sponsor but we have read the latest press release which confirms the name change.
Former NFL standout Doug Flutie will be running this event but the real draw here is the large number of current and former NFL players that are scheduled to participate at this event - Chad ‘Ocho Cinco’ Johnson, Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, Travis Fisher, Leon Washington, Corey Webster, Darnell Dockett, Antrel Rolle, Bernard Berrian, Eddie Drummond, Jon Beason, Atari Bigby, Kevin Smith, Bryant McFadden, and Rock Cartwright. In addition Mr. Tae Bo, Billy Blanks, will be in attendance along with Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels from Run DMC.
This event is being billed as the Official Celebrity Flag Football Game of Super Bowl Weekend, probably due to the large number of NFL players that are expected to participate. Tickets are $15 at the door or $10 if purchased from sppsports.com. Only a limited amount of tickets are available prior to the event. Over 6,000 attendees are expected so we recommend getting to this event early. Doors open at 11 a.m. which would probably be a smart time to get there, if not earlier. Kids in attendance have a chance to interact with the celebrity NFL players by playing in a Private Kids Scrimmage. The scrimmage will take place immediately prior to the Celebrity Flag Football Game kickoff.
There will be a Meet-and-Greet and autograph session after the game for VIPs and a few lucky fans. Doug Flutie’s band The Flutie Brothers Band will perform during halftime. Three local radio stations (98 Rock, WDAE Sports and US 103.5) will be giving away VIP tickets which cannot be purchased for this event. The charities that will be benefiting from this event include UCP and the Boys and Girls Clubs of St. Pete.
It might be very difficult to find parking at this event. There will be parking available at the City of St. Pete Beach parking lot (155 Corey Ave at St. Pete Beach) and the Sweetbay Supermarket parking lot (7625 Blind Pass Rd at St. Pete Beach). A shuttle will run from the parking lots to the TradeWinds Resort between 10:30 am and 3:30 pm. so this might be your best bet. The TradeWinds Resort is located at 5600 Gulf Blvd in St. Pete Beach.
